Mexican 55 Cocktail

January 19, 2015 By Kalli Leave a Comment

Mexican 55 Cocktail // OakhurstKitchen.comThe Mexican 55 Cocktail is one that will impress but uses classic ingredients you probably already have in your bar at home. This recipe is simple enough to serve for a group guests or just for you and your honey after a long day of work, but the complex flavors are anything but boring.

The French 75 Cocktail

The Mexican 55 is a spin on the classic French 75 cocktail which uses gin, lemon, champagne and simple syrup (sugar). The French 75 is a great way to take a run-of-the-mill sparkling wine to the next level, both of flavor and strength!

French 75 cocktails are one of our favorite champagne cocktails and we are pros at making them. We were having some friends over and wanted to start with a champagne cocktail. But we realized that many of our friends weren’t fans of gin and wanted to find an alternative to our gin based French 75. That’s when we stumbled across this great Mexican 55 recipe and ran with it.  Everyone enjoyed them, even our friend Jodie who can’t handle anything stronger than a Miller Lite.

Which Tequila Should You Use?

The short answer to which kind of tequila you should use is, look for 100% agave silver or blanco tequila.

We are big fans of Milagro Silver tequila, which is what use for this recipe.   Milagro Silver is probably one of the best tasting tequilas out there, and best of all it’s super affordable.  If Milagro is not available where you live, try another 100% agave silver or blanco tequila that sounds good to you, but make sure your tequila is 100% agave tequila.

If tequila is not 100% agave tequila there will be other kinds of alcohol in the mix to make production cheaper.  This kind of tequila is full of impurities and is what gives tequila a bad name and spawns such morning-after phrases as “I’m never drinking tequila again.”

We’ll cover margarita recipes and variations as well as other champagne cocktails in future posts, but for now we’d love to hear from you on your preferred tequila for premium drinks. Share in the comments section!
